What is Mark Wills’ song “Jacob’s Ladder” about?
Like the part where it says “So late one night by the harvest moon Jacob climbed a ladder up to Rachel’s room, he knew his place, it was right beside her, step by step up to her world, head over heels for a brown-eyed girl, and getting caught didn’t seem to matter” Did they get it on? or something?
It’s about love between a poor young man and a girl from a wealthier family. Her father tells her that being someone from a different level of living wasn’t something he approved of. She was in love anyhow. He (Jacob) climbs the ladder, goes to her room, leave a note, and run away and get married. The girls father thought he would never forgive his daughter. She returns five years later with his granddaughter and you get the drift that the family has reunited. The last part of the song is about an even greater blessing. The father has forgiven his daughter and his granddaughter asks him to tell a story about her. So he tells her how her daddy climbed the ladder to get to all that mattered to him (her mother) and that’s all that really matters because an angel was waiting (his granddaughter) at the top of the ladder, meaning his granddaughter was so precious to him and so was his daughter, he was glad to have his family around him and realized it didn’t really matter in the end that Jacob came from a poor background.
It’s more about not caring about getting caught going to get the girl he loved to run away and get married.
